700 years of craftsmanship
and innovation in defence industry
Fábrica de Munitiones de Granada was based on the production of gunpowder. The first written reference dates back to 1324 and it is fascinating to note that the factory is still producing gunpowder today. FMG has gradually developed into a comprehensive manufacturer of single and two-base propellants and propellant charges, rockets, artillery and tank ammunition.

700 years of heritage
Centuries of gunpowder craft
The origins of today’s FMG date back to 1324, when gunpowder production in Granada was first documented. What makes this story unique is that gunpowder is still being produced here today.
Historian Francisco González Arroyo believes the history goes even further – up to 800 years – because gunpowder was produced here long before it was officially used for military purposes in Spain.
Nitrocellulose-based propellants began to be manufactured in 1897, and large-calibre ammunition followed in the second half of the 20th century.

A lifetime in one factory
For centuries, FMG has shaped not only history, but also lives. Most employees joined as teenagers – at 15 – and stayed until retirement. General Manager Antonio Caro Chena started as a trainee in 1984 and has spent 39 years here.
Historian Arroyo recalls the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), when the factory played a decisive role. Workers never stopped production nor salary payments – in a country where employment was often unstable.
For locals, there were only two jobs: the factory or planting pine trees in Sierra de Huétor.
Craftsmanship and community roots
FMG had its own school, forming the best craftsmen in Spain – chemists, mechanics, fitters, designers, carpenters, electricians. Many stayed to work here; others came from Madrid and beyond to study.
The factory was a world of its own: school, shop, chapel, strong social relations and communication between unions and management. Agreements led to excellent facilities and social services still appreciated today.

Witness to world milestones
Known as Santa Bárbara or “Fábrica de Pólvoras” for most of its history, the factory became FMG under MSM Group in 2020.
For 700 years, it has stood through global milestones: the printing of the Bible, Columbus discovering America, Da Vinci painting the Mona Lisa, Shakespeare’s theatre, Newton’s laws, Tesla’s electric generator, the founding of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the first man on the Moon.
For seven centuries, this remarkable factory has been producing gunpowder, standing as a witness to humanity’s greatest milestones — from Columbus’ voyages to Tesla’s inventions. Its legacy continues to ignite history today.

FMG helps after devastating floods in Valencia
After devastating floods struck Valencia, causing severe damage and displacing many residents, our FMG factory employees joined local relief efforts. They delivered essential supplies and, most importantly, offered hands-on support to help the community recover.
